SINDHRI MANGOES
Season of Sindhri (30 May To 15 July)
Mangoes have always been a favourite fruit due to its rich taste, as it is very juicy and pulpy. In Pakistan, mangoes are cultivated in a large amount and are found in a variety in our country. Pakistan exports a large amount of mangoes to many countries. Mangoes in Pakistan are produced in Saraiki Belt, Multan and Sahiwal. Among all species Sindhri mangoes have gained a significant importance. Sindhri mango is a leading variety of Sindh province of Pakistan and is found in abundance there. These mangoes are originated from Mir Pur Khaas that is in Sindh. This mango is one of its kinds.
As mangoes are renowned as “King of the fruits” correspondingly Sindhri is known to be “The king of Mango”. It is also the national fruit of our country because these mangoes are on peak in Pakistan. Sindhri was named by Din Muhammad Junejo he was the father of late Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo. Din Muhammad Junejo brought Sindhri from Bombay and then cultivated in Sindhri. Sindhri mangoes come from the land called Mehran and so it reflects the manifestation of the people that sow it and take good care of it and pluck them off trees. These mangoes are wrapped in hay shreds till they become vibrant yellow from green.
CHAUNSA MANGOES
Season of Chaunsa (10 July To 15 August)
The Chaunsa mango of Pakistan is certainly in the worlds’ top ten varieties available. It is an exceptionally sweet mango with a wonderful fragrance and delicious soft, succulent flesh with only the minimum of fibre. Externally, as with many Asian mangoes, it is not a fruit of beauty, usually being of a pale, matt yellow appearance, but once inside the thin peel it is a delight. The mango is so delicious that not a fragment can be left. Chaunsa has quite a thick stone and the flesh is a fairly light yellow in colour.
This is a wonderful mango and highly recommended to consumers. In UK, Chaunsa is generally purchased by the box from Asian grocery stores, though some supermarkets (notably Asda, Morrison’s and Tesco) do occasionally stock them in large stores.
Chaunsa is ripe when the tenderness of the flesh can be felt through the thin peel, the flesh is becoming quite soft and the peel colour is becoming a slightly deeper pale yellow. There may also be some slight wrinkling of the peel, which is not of concern. It is often possible to buy fruit that still has a green tinge to the peel: this doesn’t necessarily mean the fruit will be immature, especially by late July or August, though best to avoid in June, at the beginning of the season.
